Kemwell’s new oral solids facility in Bangalore, India secures EMEA certification, begins tech transfer from the EU

Kemwell Pvt Ltd has been awarded a certificate of GMP-compliance for supplying to the EU from its oral solids facility located in Bangalore, India. The certification follows an extensive audit procedure completed by the Medical Products Agency, Sweden, in June 2008. Subhash Bagaria, Chairman and MD of Kemwell, says the certificate backs Kemwell’s commitment to become a global partner to its pharmaceutical customers.

Kemwell is a leading formulations contract manufacturer for multinational and Indian pharmaceutical companies for over 20 years. Kemwell’s customers include 6 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in the world. Kemwell completed construction of its new oral solids facility in January 2008, dedicated for exports to the US, Europe and Japan.

The unit is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for two billion tablets and capsules, with provisions to increase capacity to five billion per annum. “There has been great flexibility built into this facility,” said Anurag Bagaria, VP, Business Development of Kemwell. “It is designed to manufacture uncoated, sugar-coated, film-coated tablets, effervescent tablets, and capsules with batch sizes ranging from 5 kg to 1000 kg.”

In August 2006, Kemwell had announced the acquisition of a Pfizer manufacturing facility in Uppsala, Sweden. Kemwell has retained all manufacturing and personnel on the site, which produces API, tablets, capsules and suppositories. “Our Swedish acquisition has provided us with an access to global technology and quality standards. Our new oral solids facility in India has successfully drawn on the wealth of experience available in Sweden, providing European quality of manufacturing standards at Indian standards of cost,” said Anurag Bagaria. The Swedish site also serves as the base for QP release testing into the EU, working hand-in-hand with the Indian facility.

Kemwell has secured contracts with a couple of European pharma majors and has begun tech transfer from the EU. Kemwell has long-standing relationships with innovator companies for the Indian market such as AstraZeneca, Bayer, GSK, J&J, Novartis, and Pfizer. “We now want to extend our services to similar customers for their global needs,” said Anurag Bagaria. The new plant will increase current capacity by over 10 times thus catapulting the company into an area of high growth.

Said Subhash Bagaria, “In the worldwide pharmaceutical industry, North America, Western Europe and Japan make up over 80% of the total market size. These countries are currently looking at reducing costs and increasing productivity by outsourcing to low-cost countries like India and China. Our new oral solids facility will cater to all such markets and build on the 20 years of experience that Kemwell benefits from.”
