Here’s Hope for Battered Mothers

Columbia, MO, October 4, 2008 – More than 3,650 American women lose their lives to domestic abuse each year.
If you’ve never suffered abuse, you may ask why they stay. Why do they endure abuse year after year until finally their lives are lost?
One reason is because they have nowhere to go if they run with their children.
BMRF Volunteer Marte Cliff says “When we think of abused women, most of us don’t realize two important things. First is that because safe houses must remain hidden from abusers, most people don’t know where to find them. Even law enforcement agencies and emergency room personnel are often ignorant of their locations. Second, and perhaps most important, is that many safe houses will take only the women – children are not welcomed.”
And that’s why The Battered Mothers Resource Fund was established. Through their toll-free, nationwide hotline (800-592-7870), moms and their children can find safety. BMRF maintains an extensive database of shelters across the U.S. to ensure that no matter where a woman is when she calls, volunteers can find shelter for her and her children.
BMRF director Phillip Baney says “We believe that in this time of turmoil, mothers and children need to be together. Children need the security of their mother’s presence, and in order to heal and go forward, mothers need to see and touch their children, and know that they are safe. To date, we have helped over 4,000 mothers and their children find such shelter. ”
“Our hope is that citizens at every level will keep the toll-free number and give it freely when they meet a Mom in trouble. That small action could very well save a life.”
In addition to information, BMRF offers advice, guidance, and even financial aid to get mothers and their children to a shelter, and to provide such basics as clean clothing, baby supplies, toothpaste, and medical attention.
BMRF is a 501c3 organization, but receives no government funding. All funds used to help these moms and kids come from the volunteers themselves and donations from others who care.
And now, as the holidays approach, BMRF is seeking a little extra help so they might provide some measure of joy to Mothers and children who will spend Christmas in a shelter.
The goal is to provide at least one gift for each child.
If you need help, would like to help us provide Christmas for these kids, or would simply like to learn more about domestic battery, please visit www.batteredmothers.org or call 800-592-7870 and speak to one of our volunteers.
